Fees and Insurance
Working Together
My practice is fully self-pay. I’ve chosen to work outside the insurance system so that our work is not shaped by a diagnosis, treatment authorization or a session limit.
I see clients online throughout California and North Carolina, Monday through Thursday, with daytime appointments available.
Fees
Session fees reflect the markets I serve, so rates differ by state of residence:
California residents
Individual therapy — $200 per 50-minute session
Couples therapy — $250 per 55-minute session
North Carolina residents
Individual therapy — $175 per 50-minute session
Couples therapy — $200 per 55-minute session
I hold a limited number of reduced-fee slots for clients with financial need. If cost is a barrier, mention it during our consultation and we’ll talk honestly about what’s possible.
Initial consultation (all clients) — Free, 45 minutes. Finding the right therapist matters more than almost anything else. I don’t think you should have to pay to find out whether we’re a fit. This is a real working conversation. We’ll talk about what’s bringing you in, you’ll get some immediate support and you’ll experience firsthand how I work. If I’m not the right person, I’ll do my best to point you toward someone who is. Either way, you’ll leave with something useful.
I accept all major credit cards, HSA, and FSA cards. Payment is due at the time of session.
Using Your Out-of-Network Benefits
Many PPO insurance plans reimburse 50–80% of the cost of therapy with an out-of-network provider, once your deductible is met. That can bring your actual cost per session down considerably, depending on your plan.
Here’s how it works:
- You pay my full fee at the time of session.
- I provide you with a monthly superbill — an itemized statement with everything your insurance company needs.
- You submit the superbill to your insurance company (most now accept these through an app or online portal), and they reimburse you directly.
To find out what your plan covers, call the member services number on your insurance card and ask:
- Do I have out-of-network benefits for outpatient mental health?
- What is my out-of-network deductible, and how much of it have I met?
- What percentage do you reimburse for CPT code 90837 (individual therapy) or 90847 (couples/family therapy)?
- How do I submit claims?
I’m glad to walk you through this during our consultation — it takes about five minutes to sort out.
One note for couples: some plans don’t cover couples therapy, or cover it only when tied to one partner’s diagnosis. It’s worth asking specifically about code 90847.
Cancellation Policy
I ask for 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule a session. Sessions canceled with less notice are charged the full fee, since that time was reserved for you. Insurance and superbills cannot be applied to missed sessions.
